Day of Life #8 - Update 2

Around 3 pm Madeline went into surgery. This was to place the central line which provides nourishment and antibiotics. They were able to place it successfully but they took a blood gas and she showed as having low hemoglobin so they did a blood transfusion. It seems to have gone OK. She still is not having urine output like she should, for now they are waiting to see if the kidney will repair/resolve itself. The same goes for her liver issue which they identified as having hemorrhaging around it. They say it may resolve itself. It is a wait and see game right now.
She still has a tube in her stomach that pulls out bile which she has been secreting, as well she is still draining fluid from her abdomen into the drain. The tube collecting bile will stay until it runs clear. They are hoping to take her off the ventilator soon (soon does not mean tonight..maybe a day or two).. when the ventilator and bile tube are gone, and hopefully her bowels start functioning normally she may be able to do oral feedings again. However, there is no way to give a time estimation for that. Right now the biggest issues are making sure her kidneys begin functioning again, figuring out if she has a blood infection and continuing to treat it, watching her liver, and keeping her stable.

It's a long road ahead and we hope she will improve. It looks like it could be several more weeks even if she only goes up from here. This has been the hardest few days of our life and we are emotionally, physically and mentally exhausted - but we are thankful for all the support and prayers and assistance we have been offered by everyone.

Thank you all, God Bless

  2. I can completely relate to the strain this is putting on you and your husband. I am sending prayers and positive thoughts for you. It's amazing how strong these little ones can be. Much stronger than most adults I know.
    Prayers and wishes!
