Well...after our lasdt post Madeline started getting more and more fussy and uncomfortable...
We attempted breastfeeding with her at 12 and she did so so then took the rest of her feed through the ng tube. By 3 pm she was crying hysterically and was inconsolable. The nurse took a urine sample to have tested for a Urinary Tract Infection. They suspect that her discomfort could be coming from a UTI. Her cathater has been in longer than ideal and does lead to greater risk of infection. They will not know for sure until 72 hrs when the cultures come back.
The Dr. also ordered a barium swallow to look at how she swalllows and make sure she wasn't aspirating (which is where fluid is swallowed into the 'wrong pipe' so to speak). They found out that she seems to be ok on that level, however during the test she had reflux (where fluid comes back up). So they would like to start treating her for acid reflux and give her pepsid. There's a test they could do to be 100% certain it is acid reflux but it requires putting another tube with a scope down her throat which none of us want to do. If that does not work they would suspect that she is allergic to a protein in the breast milk that I would get from the kind of milk we drink (cow's milk). If that is the case then they would have me go on a dairy free diet and see how that works. So basically there are a lot of unknowns-
What we do know is that Madeline seemed very much in pain today! It seems that from mid/end of last week until now she has just been increasingly irritable/in pain. She continued to cry/scream on and off all the way through shift change at 7 pm where she cried herself to sleep. Since then they have been giving her the feeds through the ng tube and I believe plan to do so as long as she sleeps. Her last bit of cries sounded like pure exhaustion -poor thing! She had a long day!
Please pray we could figure out the source of her pain and help her get better!!
Thanks everyone, have a great night and God Bless!
Try Almond Milk if you have to go dairy free, My parents swear by it. Also.. if you do have to do the dairy free diet.. get at me.. I've got some good recipes you can pass on to people for quick dairy free meals.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck.
poor baby :( still praying.
ReplyDeleteIt is unfortunately not uncommon for babies to be allergic to cow's milk. Daniel could not tolerate it and I was completely off it for about 8 months. I couldn't even eat small amounts of sheep cheese. Although it is hard I would try that first. We used coconut milk while dairy-free because it is the most similar to cow's milk and very nourishing. I know way, way more than I'd ever wanted to about special diets (grain-free, dairy-free, etc. if you want to talk ever!
ReplyDeleteOh Madeline...Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your Mum and Dad.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope the doctors soon figure out an answer to all your discomforts!
